Naming Conventions

Naming Conventions

Beginning with Ellie 8.7, you can establish naming rules for various asset types directly within the platform. Consistent naming conventions streamline the process of finding, reusing, and trusting your models, entities, and attributes. Instead of consulting external documentation or relying on team memory, Ellie now helps you enforce your company's naming standards directly in the tool.

Admin Setup

Add a new rule

  1. Go to Admin Tools → Naming Conventions.

  2. Click + New Rule.

  3. Select the Asset type from the dropdown:

    • Conceptual / Logical / Physical → Model, Entity, or Attribute

  4. Define rules for that scope:

    • Text case (snake_case, PascalCase, camelCase etc.)

    • Prefixes (include separator, e.g. DIM_)

    • Suffixes (include separator, e.g. _ID)

  5. Click Save to activate the rules.

Notes

  • Only one set of rules can be active per asset type.

  • Prefixes and suffixes should include their respective separator. Prefixes and suffixes are ignored for text case validation.

  • Unsaved changes are discarded if you leave the page.

  • Deleting rules requires confirmation to avoid mistakes.

Modelling work with Naming Conventions rules

When creating or renaming an asset (model, entity, or attribute):

  • Valid name → Saved without warnings.

  • Invalid name → A warning icon appears . Hover over it for details.

  • Warnings are non-blocking → You can still save and continue working.

Duplicate names → Saving is blocked if another asset with the same name already exists in the same level, type, and folder.
